Italian carved alabaster " Grand Tour" souvenir sculpture - late 19th century. Depicting the Medici lion, mounted on a plinth base with canted-corners. The stone has black and grey veining. The Medici lion is recognizable by its paw on a sphere and its tail between its hind legs. The mouth is half-opened showing its teeth. Excellent craftmanship with attention to details. The original Medici Lions were made for Villa Medici in Rome (1598-1789) and can be found today at the Loggia Dei Lanzi/Piazza della Signoria in Florence. In beautiful condition, no damages or cracks, one small chip on the bottom of the base. Please feel free to contact us for additional photos or information.
